Senior Mechanical Engineer

Seattle-based Oscilla Power, Inc. (OPI) is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join a small but growing team working on the commercialization of marine renewable energy. OPI iscurrently executing a large US Department of Energy funded project aimed at demonstrating and validating its ocean wave energy technology at a Navy test site in Hawaii.

We are looking for a team member who is passionate not only about engineering and renewable energy, but also specifically in solving engineering challenges related to marine energy. This position will focus on the development of mechanical design solutions for the OPI’s wave energy systems, including but not limited to working with and managing vendors for key subsystems; developing mounting and interface solutions for hydraulic and electrical systems; and designing critical mechanical drivetrain components (e.g., lubrication systems, bearings). The ideal candidate has a strong ability to work in a field where there are limited design guidelines and standards. They will be expected to manage risk through detailed strength & fatigue calculations, backed up by common sense and a practical approach. A positive attitude to proactively identify challenges and develop elegant, innovative mechanical solutions that can make a substantive impact on the cost and performance is a must.

Expected skills & experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required; Master’s degree or higher is preferred.
  • Five or more years of experience in a product development or design engineering role.
  • Proven ability to take a concept from a minimal sketch to a realized system.
  • Knowledge and experience with machining, welding, forming, and surface finishing processes.
  • Experience working on multi-domain systems that incorporate electro- and hydro- mechanical components.
  • Experience with mechanical power transmission components, hydraulics, instrumentation, and corrosion protection
  • Experience working with vendors to develop and identify optimum off-catalog and custom parts.
  • Experience with CAD, FEA and numerical analysis packages is essential. Oscilla uses Solidworks, ANSYS and Matlab (amongst others) and specific knowledge of these, or a strong willingness to learn, is required.
  • Good written and oral communications skills are essential.
  • Experience working on systems for the marine environment is desirable, but not required.

The applicant is expected to work a minimum of 40 hrs/week, primarily out of OPI’s office in Seattle, WA. OPI has a competitive benefits package and dynamic working environment. Salary and stock options will be commensurate with experience. For further details or to apply, please contact us at employment@oscillapower.com. Applicants should provide a minimum of a cover letter and a two page resume. Underrepresented and women candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

Engineering Project Manager (Marine systems construction)

Seattle-based Oscilla Power, Inc. (OPI) is looking for an Engineering Project Manager to join a small but growing team working on the commercialization of marine renewable energy. OPI is currently executing a large US Department of Energy funded project aimed at demonstrating and validating its ocean wave energy technology at a Navy test site in Hawaii.

As our technology and size grows, we have developed a need for a talented and motivated individual to help manage ongoing fabrication, assembly and integration of our large-scale prototype system. This person would have day to day responsibility for managing the fabrication of the marine systems and subsystems, developing and managing schedules, and acting as an interface between shipyard, naval architects, vendors and the OPI engineering team.

The technology and designs we are developing are first of a kind and so the successful candidate will need to be adaptable and have an excellent understanding of mechanical systems, as they will need to be able to confer with engineers to make important assembly or fabrication decisions on the fly. OPI works with a number of vendors both in the Seattle area and across the US, so some travel will be expected.

Expected skills & experience:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a related Engineering subject is required.
  • Five or more years of experience in a similar role, including proven project management experience.
  • Demonstrable track record of working with and managing multiple vendors to a successful project/phase conclusion.
  • An understanding of the issues and challenges of working in the marine environment is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with machining, fabrication and finishing processes. Ability to interpret mechanical/hydraulic/electrical drawings and schematics. Experience with quality assurance.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and other office applications as well as project management software will be required.
  • The successful candidate will be expected to provide regular reporting and presentations on progress; excellent written and verbal communications skills are essential.
