Mechanical Engineer - Analysis and Modeling

Oscilla power is looking for an individual to lead the numerical modelling efforts for our wave energy systems. This is a role for someone who has a fundamental grasp of fluid mechanics & hydrodynamics and has experience in one or more mid-fidelity modelling tools, such as Orcaflex, Proteus DS, WEC-Sim, or similar. This is an important core role within the Oscilla Power team, and the selected candidate would direct our numerical modelling efforts, which will including enhancing existing models and developing new model representations, while ensuring these are validated against experimental data. Further, they will also be involved in developing new technical approaches and identifying solutions to existing challenges.

At Oscilla, numerical models of our technology are at the core of everything we do, and are used to generate design loads, develop control approaches and predict performance. Understanding the accuracy of the models is crucial and Oscilla works with several external parties to ensure that best practices are followed, and appropriate diligence is applied. The right candidate will be familiar with the state of the art, be highly detail oriented, and comfortable working with others to ensure appropriate approaches are taken.

Prior experience modeling wave energy converters, and experience with experimental testing would be advantageous. However, adjacent experience in fluids, with experience working with submersible vehicles, or surface vessels, along with a willingness to adapt and learn new skills would be acceptable. Oscilla uses Matlab, ProteusDS and NEMOH as primary numerical modelling platforms.

A master's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture or an associated field is required, although direct experience in the required skillset is considered more valuable. Oral and written communication skills are critical in this role, given the need to convey complex concepts and findings to both the internal team and external stakeholders.

This is a full-time, on-site position and the applicant will be expected to work 40 hrs/week and will be located, or be willing to relocate, to OPI’s office in Seattle, WA. Mechanical Systems Engineer

Seattle-based Oscilla Power, Inc. (OPI) is looking for a Mechanical Systems Engineer with experience designing large complex systems, ideally for the marine environment. They would contribute to a small but growing team working on the commercialization of marine renewable energy. At OPI we are currently executing several US Department of Energy funded projects aimed at demonstrating and validating our ocean wave energy technology. We are looking for an individual who is driven and excited to work on a complex, multi-disciplinary engineering challenge, while also making significant strides towards reducing carbon emissions and creating a cleaner environment.
The successful applicant will have experience designing large and complex mechanical systems and will have an awareness of offshore marine operations. Ideally, they will have real-world experience designing systems for extended use in a saltwater environment. The role will primarily focus on the mechanical and hydraulic systems of Oscilla’s wave energy systems, working with our internal team and a wide range of partners. Their input will touch all aspects of the system, including the hull, drivetrain, ballast systems, and other unique parts of the system.
The ideal candidate will therefore have an exemplary engineering background in a relevant mechanical specialization. They should be able to demonstrate a record of effective communication (both verbally and written) and ideally will have experience executing deliverable-driven projects, including developing schedules and managing resources.

Minimum qualifications:

Engineering degree in relevant mechanical, naval, or other ocean specialization.

5 years of post-degree experience in relevant position. Less may be acceptable with a higher degree.

Solid understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience and a familiarity in tracking deliverables, developing schedules and tracking spending as part of executing projects

Electrical Systems Engineer

Seattle-based Oscilla Power, Inc. (OPI) has an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Engineer to join a small but growing team working on the commercialization of marine renewable energy. OPI is developing technology to harness energy from ocean waves and is executing several projects aimed at demonstrating and validating its ocean wave energy technology.

​We are looking for a team member who is passionate not only about engineering and renewable energy, but also someone who is interested in solving the complex electrical engineering challenges related to marine energy. This position will involve the continued development and improvement of the electrical systems for OPI’s wave energy systems and will ultimately involve taking ownership of specific multidisciplinary projects. This position will involve both the development of innovative concepts and translating those ideas into detailed schematics and test-bench prototypes. The successful candidate will be expected to effectively work with engineers from other disciplines to help solve interesting problems, develop specifications, and manage work and deliverables.

​Oscilla Power’s systems involve the conversion of physical motion to grid compatible power and thus the successful applicant will have demonstrated experience with similar electrical applications. They will be expected to work within a small team and manage project activities towards specific design objectives. A positive attitude to proactively identify challenges and develop elegant, innovative solutions that can make a substantive impact on the cost and performance is a must.
Key Responsibilities:

Design and implement low-voltage (<1000V) power systems and support the development of solutions for grid integration for marine renewable energy applications.

Lead the development of complex industrial motion control systems, overseeing various subsystem contractors, while focusing on optimizing the performance of the overall system.

Develop and maintain electrical documentation, including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, electrical schematics, logic diagrams, and panel layouts.

Develop specifications and functional descriptions for components and subsystems.
-
Oversee the programming and configuration of PLCs, Motor Drives (VFDs), Generators, and motion control systems by internal staff and external contractors, ensuring adherence to standards, project specifications, and timelines.

Contribute to the design and specification of electrical panels, overseeing their construction by contractors.

Utilize MATLAB Simulink and Simscape for power systems and grid integration modeling.

Act as the internal subject matter expert for the electrical systems relating to Oscilla Power’s technology implementation, including, but not exclusively limited to, PLCs, HMI, Inverters, VFD drives, generators, motors, lighting, power distribution, system integration, sensors, and electro-mechanical devices.

Interface with contractors and technicians to successfully install various projects and lead troubleshooting efforts.

Required skills & experience:

Applicant must be a US citizen or US Permanent Resident.

Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or related field.

5+ years of experience in a relevant position such as industrial automation, motion control systems, or utilities, with a strong focus on power systems and grid integration. Experience requirements can be relaxed for higher degrees.

Extensive experience creating and interpreting Electrical, Instrumentation, and Controls (EI&C) documentation
-
Demonstrated expertise with PLCs, VFDs, and motion control systems, Siemens preferred (SINAMICS, STARTER, PROFINET), although experience with other major vendors (Rockwell Automation, Omron, Beckhoff, Mitsubishi Electric) is also acceptable.

Proficiency in creating and interpreting electrical one-line and three-line diagrams.

Strong understanding of MATLAB Simulink and Simscape for power systems and grid integration modeling.

Working knowledge of SCADA systems and experience managing external development teams.

Comprehensive understanding of relevant codes and standards (UL, NEC, etc.) pertaining to wire sizing, fuse sizing, and panel design.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.

Proven ability to manage and direct technical teams and contractors.

A Professional Engineering (PE) certification (or the ability to obtain one).

Experience working on systems for the marine environment would be advantageous.
